Why It Matters:
ASMR isn’t just a trend; it’s a tool for relaxation, stress relief, and enhanced focus. Whether it’s calming your mind after a long day or helping manage anxiety, ASMR videos can have surprising benefits. Here’s why it matters for mental wellness.
The Breakdown:
ASMR, or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is that tingling sensation that runs through your scalp or neck when exposed to specific sounds or visual triggers. Whether it’s whispering, soft tapping, or page turning, ASMR videos target this response, providing a sense of calm and comfort.
My Journey:
A dear friend of mine first introduced me to ASMR, and while I was initially hesitant, I’ve since discovered the peace and curiosity it can spark. These videos help calm my mind, engaging my senses and allowing me to unwind from daily stress.
Like many healing tools, ASMR comes in countless forms. When I first explored it to help with sleep, I tried Jojo's channel, where soft whispering and gentle sound effects created a soothing environment. Sometimes, I’d simply listen with earbuds in, letting the sounds lull me to sleep, while other times, I'd watch the visuals for extra relaxation.
As I explored further, I gravitated toward hair-brushing videos on ASMR Psychetruth and whisper storytelling on Gentle Whispering ASMR, which provided an immersive sense of calm. I’ve even substituted the Relax Sleep ASMR channel as a sound machine when we’re away from home, and it’s been surprisingly effective for all of us.
Currently, my favorite channel is Fern's Holistic ASMR. Fern’s soothing presence, soft tone, and humble expertise make each video an experience, sparking curiosity about her holistic methods. I even have a friend who enjoys watching ASMR haircut videos, proving just how varied ASMR preferences can be.
One type I haven’t tried yet is ASMR with drawing or painting. As a child, I loved watching people create art, and it’s funny to realize how many of my ASMR preferences might actually stem from my inner child. What about you? What did your child self find relaxing or mesmerizing?
